Visiting Huanchaco, Peru, we find the Seaside City interesting, especially its unique reed boats. Reed boats are iconic of Huanchaco and have been spotted on the shorelines for more than 3,000 years. Fishermen ride out the reed boats to sea and catch fish all day long. Also called caballitos de Totoro in Peru, these reed boats are entirely made of reed. Totora reed is a tall leafy plant that grows in marshes or swamps in Central America. In Peru, reed has a long cultural and historical background. There is even a Peruvian island called Uros, where the entire village is made of only reed!
The Chimu culture was the civilization in power on the Huanchaco and Trujillo coast of Peru from 800 to 1400 A.D. The main harbor for the Chimus was Huanchaco, and the Chimu lived dependent on fish. An interesting fact about Huanchaco is that they are known to be one of the greatest surfers. They surf and ride waves on their reed boats, using wooden paddles.
The reed boats are made out of the reed plant and are tightly fastened together with string. The fishermen weave and layer the bushels of reed on top of each other. The boat looks like a pointed Viking boat when finished. Like the shape of a Viking horn, the fishermen can sit, stand, or paddle on the ships in the ocean.
Similarly, our Watercolor Recolored by ege carpets’ design resembles the serene ocean and waves the fishermen surf on in Huanchaco. The soft black and blue lines look like the fish that the Chimus catch on a beautiful sunny day. The Watercolour Recolored uses a beautiful cobalt blue tone that resembles the ripples inside the Trujillo coast.
We use our oceanic blue watercolor carpet ege carpets as the background for our beautiful mood board. We then use contract materials Sunflower that features a smooth satin finish tile. We pair Eco-Terr Slabs, a luxurious marble and granite cement blend, with Entwine, a graphic check fabric in bold colors. We also feature Rattan Strie to resemble the reed boats in a neutral beige color. Abracadazzle cosmic is a hand-woven abaca material that also mimics the boat’s aesthetic. We use complementing materials Bohemia, Knowledge, Plastic Basket, with DecorFlou.
