On our trip to Sweden, we ventured to the incredible Artipelag Museum in the country’s capital. The museum is situated on the archipelago – a chain of islands extending roughly 60 kilometers from Stockholm. Surrounded by a large body of water from which other clusters of islands immerge, the scenery is breathtaking. It is one of the country’s best undisturbed natural environments. When there, you are deeply connected with nature in its purest form and it’s the source for our fun interpretation of a water carpet pattern.
The architectural firm Nyrens worked hard to create an interior that embodied the landscape that surrounds it. Concrete and wood were used on the exterior, combined with a plant-covered roof to further merge the museum with nature. Walking through the building, you’re met with panoramic views of lakes, lush green islands, and the Baltic Ocean beyond. The bathroom, in particular, deserves special recognition. Its walls are stone, with two huge granite basins in the center and two-tone wooden cubical doors. These materials add a rugged natural texture, epitomizing the landscape found outside its walls.
Enthused by the architect’s ability to bring nature inside through their innovative design, we created a custom carpet that did just that: our water carpet. When creating this design, we drew inspiration from both the surrounding scenery and the unique bathroom interior. The carpet has a distinct waved pattern reminiscent of the lake onto which the museum overlooks. In nature, there are almost no hard edges or sharp lines. In this way, the pattern’s soft edges further remind us of the natural world and its fluidity. Our water carpet creates an aesthetically pleasing contrast against more angular manufactured items when used in a commercial space.
In terms of color, we used dark blue tones as the base combined with an offsetting brown. The blue is similar to the lake’s water, whereas the brown reflects the wood used in the bathroom. When used together, these natural colors create a unique combination. We also carefully blended the two juxtaposing colors when transitioning from brown to blue. However, we kept a hard edge when transitioning from blue to brown. This gives the perception of the waves receding and the illusion of three dimensions. In this way, the water carpet introduces texture into space, similar to the rugged surfaces found in the bathroom.
