The main areas of the Danxia landform are in Kangle and Baiyin townships. The most visited site of the park is close to downtown Zhangye, the Linze Danxia scenic area. The Bingo scenic area is also popular and located on the north bank of the Liyuan River.

The unique rainbow mountains were formed by sandstones and siltstones deposited in China before the Himalayan Mountains were formed. The sand and silt were deposited with iron and trace minerals, providing it with the perfect ingredients to create rainbow colors. The collision of two tectonic plates led to the formation of the mountains, and the layers became exposed.

The mountains’ primary color is red, created due to an iron oxide coating and cementation between sandstone grains. Sometimes, iron oxides for a different color. For instance, oxidized limonite can produce brown or yellow staining of sandstones. Magnetite can create black staining. The coloring will become green if there is chlorite or iron silicate in the clay. This is why the rainbow mountains have beautiful and unique colors.
