This Modern wave carpet design is inspired by the Bund Finance Center in Shanghai

Bund Finance Center Shanghai Close Up Talk Carpet

Shanghai is full of modern and unique. architecture, one of which is the Bund Finance Center. Designed by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio, the building concluded its construction in 2017. The mixed-use development was part of a project that aimed at revitalizing Shanghai’s waterfront.

The exterior of the Bund Finance Center consists of three moving golden-colored curtains made of stainless steel pipes. The curtains hang from the third floor of the building and move along tracks powered by electric motors. Throughout the day, you can see the layers moving around while music is playing. These unique curtains were developed in collaboration with a local engineer from Tongji University. It consists of layers of 675 individual magnesium alloy tassels, which are a reference to traditional Chinese bridal headdresses.

As you walk into the building, the first floor consists of a lobby, atrium, and café. The Bund is a 420,000-square-meter development with eight buildings that consist of offices, boutiques, a cultural center, and luxury retail spaces. The retail spaces are vertically layered with boutiques, concept stores for international brands, a luxury shopping mall, and restaurants. The cultural center serves as a platform for international arts and cultural exchange.

Inspired by the beautifully crafted steel curtains, we created a modern wave design that pays homage to them. We chose a pattern that creates a flow that is very similar to that of the Bund Finance Center’s exterior. Additionally, we wanted to choose colors that were similar to the golden and bronze tones of the metal while keeping an organic feel to the carpet. Therefore, we chose beige and brown tones to keep things more minimalistic while remaining modern.
