In this article, we’re going out of the normal route to visit the small town of Salento. Located in the northern hills of Quindio department in western Colombia, this town of just 7,000 residents is a hot spot among, mostly local, tourists and coffee aficionados. The colorful shops and restaurants are a stark contrast with the beautiful green mountains surrounding Salento and inspired this striped carpet palette. At the end of the town’s main road is a captivating church that stands boisterous over the main square.
A big factor that attracts tourists to Salento is the brightly colored architecture that is so unique in this part of Colombia. Walking down Calle Real towards the plaza reveals colorful building after building. The navy blue and pink color combinations of a specific shop we walked by were the main inspirations for this minimally striped carpet. We recolored the Alkaline Morse carpet by ege carpets with colors inspired by the colonial streets of Salento.
Inspired by the carpet recolor and the Colombian town, we created a material board with simple yet beautiful dark tones like Dark Knight by Sherwin-Williams. Additionally, we included the vivid red of Iota by Claret. We played a little with textures and colors by including Vintage Deux and Origina. Sir Stripe-A-Lot by HBF Textiles adds a different pattern to the board in a subtle way. To add a neutral tone, we use Oz by surfaces. Lastly, the Baywood Standard Hex Mosaic by Architessa adds just the right color and wood texture to tie it all together.
