Bo-Kaap is an area of Cape Town, South Africa that literally translates to “above the Cape”. Bo-Kaap sits on top of the slopes of Signal Hill above the city center. Known for being a historical center of Cape Malay culture in Cape Town, the neighborhood is famous for the colorful buildings and cobblestone streets. Bo-Kaap is a multicultural town and contains the largest amount of 1800s architecture in South Africa. Bo-Kaap is the oldest residential neighborhood in Cape Town.
The entire Bo-Kaap neighborhood of Cape Town is lined with cobblestone steps, which inspired our stone carpet. The cobblestone streets have a European look because they use rocks imported from Holland. Dutch people that colonized South Africa brought these cobblestones in ships. They were laid out in the 17th-18th century. Bo-Kaap still has cobblestone streets in modern times because they are the best to prevent flooding in the town. Since Bo-Kaap is on mountainous hills, the rainy season can cause flooding in the streets. The cobblestones allow the rain to disperse into mini-channels to let the rainwater flow down smoothly.
Our love for the details on the cobblestone streets of Bo-Kaap made us envision an innovative design of our own. We seamlessly translate the Bo Kaap roads to create curvy and rectangular stone shapes in our pattern. The irregular angles and lines around the stones add a modern look to a traditional setting. Using neutral grey tones, the cobblestones create a simple everyday beauty through our recolored Roches carpet design by Mr. Christian Lacroix.
We use contract materials for the rest of our material board, Lava Calda, a beautiful green glazed basalt tile. We incorporate Scribble XL, an abstract upholstery that is bold and sustainable. Dash has also added a solid pastel peach color porcelain tile. Cameo is a woven wool blend textile that also goes well with Color, Greens, Transparent in our mood board. Lastly, we use Porta Fregio, an intricate geometrical pattern in pastel pink and blue.
