Small Abandoned Quarries in China inspires this linear pattern design

Small Abandoned Quarries China Close Up Talk Carpet

Nowadays, reusing and adapting existing spaces is considered sustainable. These abandoned quarries that were repurposed are a great example. Xu Tiantian’s projects in the quarries of Jinyun consist of landscape planning, interior design, artistic planning, and social planning with an economic revitalization of the rural area. The space is a mixture of the old with the quarries’ rock formations and the new with the installations, stairs, and stages for culture to continue living in an abandoned place.

Jinyun County has many steep mountains, and it was shaped by the small-scale exploitation of local stone quarries that have been in operation for decades. The surrounding scenic area attracts many tourists. One of the most visited places in the region is the Temple of Huangdi, which was destroyed during the Ming Dynasty but reconstructed in 1994. It was admitted to the National List of Immaterial Cultural Heritage in 2011.

When entering a quarry, every space is different since they are all randomly shaped by nature. Most of the materials used to make the quarries a usable space were simple and through simple means so that nothing was too invasive. The installation details are the same on all sites, and concrete is only used if extremely necessary. The handrails are made of steel strips, and the infill of shelves and railings are made of pressed bamboo, a more suitable material for the climate.

We were inspired by the linear pattern design of the walls of the quarries. Therefore, we created a custom pattern inspired by the beautiful juxtaposition of what is artificial and what was made by nature. We decided to mix dark gray tones with sandy colors to bring that juxtaposition of the modern and the natural together.
