The Fuzhou City Teahouse has one of the best teahouse designs in China. The Chinese architecture studio Neri & Hu Design and Research Office projected the building. The original building was a wooden structure of a high-ranking Qing dynasty official’s residence featuring ornamental carvings. This teahouse design project posed the challenge of encapsulating this historic structure with a modern and unique outer layer.
The teahouse is elevated above a rammed concrete base. The copper roof reflects the enclosed historic wooden structure. The architecture studio mainly used concrete for this project. The material pays homage to the traditional earthen dwellings of the region. Inside, there is a beautiful juxtaposition between the different elements of this complex interior. The natural materials palette uses concrete and wood, contrasting traditional and modern.
Inspired by the beautiful teahouse design, we created a mood board inspired by the natural materials palette of the project. For this mood board, we decided to use dark brown tones, such as Una Micro Stripe Tile by ege carpets, Bronze Flatweave Rug by Talk Carpet, and Van Dyke Brown by Sherwin Williams. Additionally, we included Autumn Bronze by Benjamin Moore to add a lighter tone of brown. We also had bronze-toned materials like Patina 110L and Patina 107 by Moz Designs. To tie everything together, we had Classic Wood by Specified Solutions and the contrasting Cembrit Patina Inline by American Fiber Cement.
