During our Cape Town visit, we went to one of the many artisan workshops. In the weaver’s atelier of Amelia Jackson, we get to see some beautifully dyed rolls of yarn that inspire us with their gorgeous colors. Amelia Jackson Industries is a well-known local business that offers hand-woven rugs. The business first started in 1989 by Alan and Val Glasser. The two of them had only a couple of contacts and few materials. But, as they kept going to craft markets in Cape Town, the business began to grow. In 1994 they began to wholesale for independent shops and chain stores in South Africa. The name is in honor of Val’s grandmother and Alan’s great grandmother, Amelia Jackson, who was a weaver in the United Kingdom.
When we saw the beautiful colors of the dyed yarn, we were inspired to recolor our organic carpet pattern Butterfly in blues and yellows similar to the yarn in the market. This carpet design is part of our Cultures collection, in which we created taking inspiration from various cultures of the world. The collection features kilim rug patterns, tribal prints, Moorish carpet patterns, and many more.
To complement the yellow and blue carpet, we chose textiles like Wolf-Gordon’s Shennai in a beautiful blue shade, and Hebden by Camira. We also selected wood textures like the one by Wilsonart and Natural Ash by Haworth. To keep the organic carpet pattern the center of attention, we selected materials in neutral colors like Lino by santamargherita, Copper Patina, and Unicork 2. To tie it all together, we chose Arabesque by Livden, which adds an extra touch with its unique pattern and vivd contrast.
