One of the most memorable art pieces in Le Palais de Tokyo is a piece by Kate Newby. The Palais de Tokyo is one of Europe’s most prominent centers of contemporary creation. Kate Newby was born in 1979 in Auckland, New Zealand, but lives and works in Texas, USA. She travels around the world, collecting objects, materials, and fragments. Newby uses ceramics and glass for her sculptures, speculating about the nature of sculpture and its connection with the natural world.
Kate Newby’s work is featured in the Reclaim the Earth exhibit. This exhibit features fourteen artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds. Each work of art examines the links between body and land. Newby created three interventions blurring the borders between inside and outside. Her work is, entitled “it makes my day so much better is I speak to all of you”, was made from broken glass shards collected from the streets of Paris.
Inspired by Newby’s work at Le Palais de Tokyo, we created a custom dot pattern carpet. Her work creates a unique pattern of differently shaped dots, which we decided to include in our design. To create the unique colors of the glass shards as the light hits them, we added light green, yellow, and blue to the design. Additionally, we chose the gray background not only because it is similar to Newby’s work but also looks beautiful against the white.
