During our month in Italy, we visited the Loggia del Consiglio in Verona. The word “loggia” refers to an open-walled building with arched spaces. Buildings like these are seen throughout Italy and have become paramount, particularly in historic city centers. It is representative of pure Renaissance-style architecture, and the Loggia del Consiglio is Verona’s best-known example.
Originally built in 1476 as a city council building, the gallery is a true masterpiece. It is consists of several tall marble columns between the archways lining the lower floor and arched windows on the upper levels. Additionally, the entire building is covered in pictorial decorations and reliefs. Many were remade in the 1800s when the space was temporarily reused as a civil picture gallery. Worked on by multiple Italian artists, they depict happy events of the city and celebrate Italian culture.
One part of the building that stood out to us is the façade on the side of the Loggia del Consiglio. The building is decorated in multi-colored squares, lying in a grid-like fashion across the entire wall. We took this aspect of the loggia as inspiration for our multi-colored carpet. As such, we used a cream color similar to the gallery’s walls in Verona as our base. On top of this, we added a repeated tiled pattern of multi-colored squares. Each has the same shading as the squares in the façade to give them a 3D shape. We love how this gives the illusion that they extend outward from the carpet and immediately add dimension to any space.
However, we have made some notable changes from our inspiration. The façade on the Loggia del Consiglio is made up of orange, blue, red, and green shapes, with the colors repeating diagonally. We opted for softer and more muted tones of yellow, khaki-green, mint green, and red in our multi-colored carpet. The color placement is also more random, adding intrigue and preventing too many different lines from overwhelming the design.
