Artistic expression is one of the best ways to convey a strong message. Little Amal is a representation of the pain and suffering refugees go through, a subject that is more relevant than ever with the devastating crisis in Ukraine. The 3,5-meter tall puppet visited the UK to spread a message of empathy and love. Somerset House welcomed the puppet with joy after her 8,000-kilometer journey.

The puppet made its way through 65 cities to raise awareness about the refugee crisis, highlighting the situation with the children. Many of them were forced to leave their homes alone and step into the world without their parents’ support. The performance brings out the topic of child vulnerability during unfortunate events, reminding everyone that they need compassion and protection.

The whole show is an amazing visual experience, grabbing everyone’s attention and sending a powerful message. Twenty children took part in the dance show, with colorful costumes to symbolize diversity. The vibrant lights illuminated the building’s exterior to provide an enchanting backdrop for the whole experience.
Syed Haleem Najibi is an actor and a refugee that took part in the performance. He offered the girl a new pair of pajamas, symbolizing hope. He speaks of his own perspective, reminding the little girl that there is hope. Also, Syed’s emotional performance reveals that once he used to be a child refugee, having to walk away from home in search of safety. He speaks to Amal with a warm and loving tone, ensuring that refugee children feel welcomed and safe.
As the Little Amal performance at Somerset House was approaching an end, it was finally time for her to rest. A giant bed became part of the scenography, large enough to accommodate the oversized puppet. Furthermore, the last performance featured lullabies to help her rest and forget about the worries. The artist promised a worry-free future, which allowed the little girl to have a good night’s sleep.
