Craftmanship is everywhere in Egypt. While visiting Cairo we were mesmerized by the artisans at the Khan El Khalili market. The artisans’ market sells colorful décor, antiques, and souvenirs. There are artisans making brand new pieces at every corner. We spotted handmade embroidery at a specific booth that were all stacked on top of each other creating a colorful setting.
In the past, tentmakers used to create tented pavilions to host weddings, funerals, and other special events. They would then decorate these tents with a unique way of embroidery, where small pieces of fabric are sewn onto a base cloth creating unique patterns. However, many artisans are leaving the craft to find better-paying jobs. Due to the unstable political situation, tourists don’t visit Egypt as often anymore, which is nowadays the main source of income for the majority of Egyptians.
Inspired by the tentmakers’ creations at Khan El Khalili market, we decided to create a grid carpet design. Much like one of the wall hangings we saw displayed at the market, we created a grey and white custom design very similar to the original. This carpet is a beautiful statement for any office or hospitality environment.
