Further, the Philippine Whisk Broom or Soft Brooms’ primary material is flower stalks from tiger grass. And tiger grass grows in areas like Baguio in Benguet and Aliem in Ilocos Sur.
Known as a ‘walis tambo,’ this traditional Filipino broom is used to sweep polished or relatively smooth floors around the house and even on balconies and porches. Renowned for its practicality and longevity, it has long been a staple in Filipino households. It is easy to recognize with its brushstroke design. Soft brooms are convenient for sweeping hard floors or surfaces. In this way, the person using the Walis Tambo does not have to roll to pick up or collect the dust or other material swept up by the broom.
Walis Tambo in the Philippines has different variations. Two of these are famous, such as with the same handle and or with a different stick. A handle is made out of a long wooden stick that is usually under one meter in length. The fibers are tightly fastened to the broomstick using a tie wire. There are specific designs, though, that make use of the long grass stalks themselves as handles rather than separate sticks.
