In the 12th Arrondissement in Paris, Rue Crémieux is a charming street filled with colorful houses and shutters. The quirky street owes its name to Adolphe Crémieux, who was a lawyer and politician. In 1865, the Crémieux street, now known for its rainbow of colors, emerged in the French capital. This quirky street was witness to a lot of historical events, including the Seine flood of 1910. You can still find a commemorative plaque at 8 rue Crémieux, where the river level reached 1,75 m.
When walking by Crémieux street, you see a side of Paris that few experience. The quiet street brings so much color with pastel houses. You can spot the color blocking from a few streets away. The cobbled passage is a unique spot to visit and feel like a true Parisian. While some homeowners do not want photos taken of their property, others have created an Instagram for people who love Rue Crémieux.
However, Crémieux street was not always colorful. It was only in 1993 that the quirky street got its array of colorful houses. To keep the colorful street, the City of Paris asked residents to keep the façade of the homes with pastel or flashier colors. In return, the street is now only for pedestrians.
