The Barcelo Torre Hotel in Barcelona is full of character and life. Designed by a Spanish native, Jamie Hayon, this hotel takes visitors on a visual journey of Spain’s past. Hayon wanted to show a diverse side to his art by mixing jewel-toned colors with Arabic and Moorish details. Throughout the hotel, there are art and sculptures that play into the design and tell a story. When entering the hotel a giant zebra-striped bear wearing a hat greets visitors. For this black and white striped carpet design, we take inspiration from the sculpture.
Throughout the project, he takes you on a visual journey through Spain’s past, mixing Roman architectural elements and Moorish influences with tons of rich brass jewel tones. The artwork features and celebrates Flamenco dancers, bullfighters, and traditional Spanish costumes. Many of the furnishings and light fixtures are from Hayon’s multiple collaborations with Fritz Hansen, Gubi, Arflex, Cassina, and BD Barcelona. Think Monkey table, Catch chairs, and Palette tables. We use the concept of using zebra stripes but we put our own twist on it. Instead of having just one type of stripe, we design the lines to show different thicknesses, making each row a bit different from one another, This adds a unique twist to commercial spaces and will definitely add a bit of fun to an environment.
