In the Philippines, Weaving is prominent in artistry; in other regions, it is even used as a source of income. As a result of Filipino’s clever minds, they come up with designing weaving encompassed with floral motifs. They include the national flower, Sampaguita, to show more patriotism.
SAMPAGUITA FLOWER
The Philippines National Flower is Sampaguita or sometimes called Jasminum sambac. Governor-General Frank Murphy was the one who declared this in 1934. Sampaguita is a white blossom representing innocence, loyalty, and optimism. The fragrant blossoms are frequently used in garlands and perfume. Eight of the many Jasminum species that are found in the Philippines are endemic, meaning they cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Sampaguita has the reputation of being offered only to saints in the Philippines. Hence it is uncommon to give it to someone else as a gift or as a token of adoration.
SOLIHIYA WEAVING
Solihiya is one of the most widely used rattan weaves. Its striking design, which consists of a repeated grid of sunburst weaves with a hole in the middle, is impossible to overlook. The unique solihiya design allows air to flow through, which is crucial in our tropical climate. Since its formal and elaborate Spanish-colonial days, this weave has undergone significant development. With the theme of “Heritage Reimagined” for Manila FAME, designers and producers have given the solihiya pattern a modern, contemporary aspect by utilizing new forms, applications, and materials.
The solihiya weave, among other things, is a deserving portrayal of our rich and vibrant cultural tapestry that extends beyond the home and architecture. The allure of local things can no longer be avoided or even scorned because there is a rich treasury to delve into. It is no longer just a seat or a display object. Now we may proudly take our history and tradition as far as we can.
Inspired by Sampaguita Solihiya Weave, we created a weave pattern with a floral design. We used three main colors such as beige, white and green color. Beige to emphasize the weave color. White and green for leaves and flower petals. This is shown to exhibit Philippine weaving with flowers emerging inside the pattern. The design is perfect for open spaces like lobbies, sitting areas, etc.
