The Art Deco era brought a new architectural style to China. However, this western style differed from others that arrived in the country. Art Deco in China included sub-genres that incorporate design elements from different cultures. Poy Gum Lee became one of Shanghai’s most essential and versatile Art Deco designers. His style ranges from classic mid-period Art Deco to Chine Deco to the Mediterranean.

Born in 1900, Lee studied at the Pratt Institute, earning his diploma in architecture in 1920. He designed YMCAs and YWCAs in 11 cities throughout China. The architect also designed many buildings in Shanghai, including the International YMCA, the Navy Y, the Chinese YMCA, the National YMCA Headquarters, and the YWCA. The YWCA was constructed in 1932 and features the geometric design and streamlined façade of a modern building. However, Lee added Ming and Qing-style ornamentation to add a bit of culture to the interior. The National YMCA Headquarters is also a prime example of Chinese Deco.

Inspired by Lee’s YWCA’s ceiling, which featured a typical art deco ceiling design, we created a custom carpet that is very similar. The ceiling features a grid-like shape that frames circles with more shapes. This unique pattern was even more breathtaking with the cream, brown, yellow, aqua, and turquoise. Although the pattern is very busy, everything flows well because of the more muted colors that perfectly marry one another.
