Located in the Fengtai District of Beijing, the Sunken Garden is an exhibition that merges the modern with the traditional. The structures feature a current build that still takes nature as its main inspiration. The concept came to be out of a mission of creating an experience that is both intimate and intense. The project looks at ideas present in Suzhou gardens tradition, including the cave’s rock, outcrop, and occidental equivalent. Additionally, it pays homage to the hanging garden concept, which is much more modern.

The Sunken Garden opened to the public in 2013 and was created by the Plasma Studio. As you enter the exhibition, you feel like you are in a canyon with compressed landscape corridors. The design team wanted to use this feeling of thickness and formational to explore how architectural elements can create a passage where material, shade, and enclosure dictate the spatial experience. Additionally, the pavement flows throughout the garden, creating a sense of harmony and fluidity throughout.

Inspired by the shapes, we created a triangle design with the KSI carpet. With the Sunken Garden in mind, we decided to recolor it in grey, beige, and black tones. This color palette creates a modern and unique carpet design along with the distinctive geometric qualities of the pattern.

We decided to use stone-like textures for the material board by including Rift by Atlas Concorde USA, Babylon Gray by MSI, and Eco Terr Slabs. Additionally, we wanted to play with tones of green to pay homage to the foliage in the gardens. Therefore, we included Mystique by Garrett Leather, Jungle Canopy by Benjamin Moore, and Hidden Trail by Sherwin Williams. Lastly, we wanted to play with a metallic color and unique pattern by adding Fabricoil Steel by Cascade Architectural as a final touch.

If you want to find the perfect color for one of our many carpet designs, Talk Carpet’s recolor program is ideal for you. You can choose any of our nine carpet substrates to take your project to the next level. Additionally, our online tool lets you quickly visualize what the recolor will look like. You can get your Carpet in just three weeks. Contact us to learn more.
