China is popularized for its contemporary architecture. One of the unique buildings in China is the cultural island of the Harbin Opera House, which sits on the banks of the Songhua River on the outskirts of Harbin. Designed by MAD Architects, the opera house features a grand theatre. It can accommodate an audience of 1,600 people and a smaller theatre for an audience of 400. The fluid structure of the building looks like it was sculpted by wind and water.
The construction of the Harbin Opera House started in 2011. In 2010, the MAD Architects group won the open international competition for Harbin Cultural Island, a master plan for an opera house, a cultural center, and the surrounding wetland landscape along the Songhua River. The complex’s construction was only completed in 2015.
The exterior of the opera house is inspired by the twisted landscape of the surrounding area. The façade of the building creates an organic line design with smooth white aluminum panels. Once inside the building, the grand lobby features transparent glass walls that connect the interior with the swooping façade and exterior plaza. The surface of the building alternates between smooth and faceted. It pays homage to the snow and ice of the climate in the region.
Inspired by the unique Harbin Opera House, we wanted to create a custom carpet that featured the organic line design. For this design, we included shapes similar to the opera house’s swooping façade. Additionally, we decided to have a green background about the beautiful landscape surrounding the gorgeously designed building.
