Bogota, Columbia, is famous for the picturesque Andes mountains and their diverse art and architecture scene. Colombians have a colorful history of using calming earthy tones in their textiles and terracotta designs. Upon visiting Folies’s furniture design store in Bogota, we instantly fell in love with how their furniture recreates old classics into a modern style. They use neutral tones to match their design identity using mainly eco-friendly materials.

The Koinobori vases, in particular, blend a traditional design with a contemporary one. The Koinobori Grande vase at Folies is made of ceramic material and 100% locally produced in Columbia. Folies’ designers use the enamel casting adhesion technique where pulverized glass is cast onto hot metal. The history of the Koinobori shape in vases goes back to the 1600s in Japan. The Koinobori fish are carp known for their intricate half-circle shapes in the scales. This dazzling scale shape was used in the Koinobori pottery method, which the Columbians adopted in their artisan techniques.

The vase inspires us because it looks like two individual pottery sticks together. The top section of the vase features the Koinobori pattern that looks very similar to a traditional Colombian woven basket. The glaze is only for the top area to make it look sparkly and trendy, whereas the bottom looks like a natural terracotta vase from Columbia’s nostalgic past. Folies play around with the past and the future in their fashionable designs. The bottom part of the vase embraces minimalism using simple vertical lines.

We created an earth tone palette reflecting the neutral earthy tones found in Columbia’s beautiful outdoors. Inspired by the palette of the Andes Mountains and the Koinobori vase, we recreate Pigment by ege Carpets. The carpet reflects a neutral reddish-brown tone that symbolizes the minimalistic grande vase. Modern and evocative, this earthy pattern captures the essence of Columbian nature. Full of patterns inspired by authentic craft and cultural symbolism, the designs allow you to experience the world in your very own office. For our earth tone palette mood board, we use Pigment RECOLORED by ege carpets with Reform A New Wave Sand. Next, we include Oceanic by Camira Fabrics, an intricate pattern in pink and green tones.

We then use Moroccan by Design and Direct Source with Antique Longleaf by Goodwin Company. Pennant Celliant by Designtex is a beautiful geometric design, and Ivoire by Sherwin-Williams is a neutral yellowish beige. Lastly, we use a rich Deep Mauve with a lighter Sedona Brown by Benjamin Moore.
