Fernando Botero is a Colombian artist who painted overtly round figures and still life subjects. Mostly known as Botero, the artist had worked as a set designer and illustrator at the start of his career. At the age of 21, he moved to Paris and visited the Louvre Museum often. At the museum, he studied the baroque period pieces and was particularly inspired by the works of Ruben, who also used rotund figures in his work.
Botero’s paintings and sculptures are very distorted and exaggerated in scale. He has painted and sculpted a wide variety of subjects from serious and topical to whimsical and funny. Additionally, Botero’s pieces are very large, making it quite a dramatic experience when seeing one in person. Botero uses a lot of color in his work, but nothing is too bright. His work is very pleasing to the eye when it comes to color.
Inspired by the Colombian artist’s work, we created a suede carpet recolor with the Velours carpet. We were particularly inspired by Botero’s use of color in his paintings. The bright greens and oranges paired with neutral browns and creams create a harmonious yet entrancing work of art. Keeping that in mind, we created a material board centered around the mixture of neutral and bright colors like Botero’s paintings.
In this material board, we decided to pair different textures of neutral colors to go with the Velours RECOLORED by ege carpets, like the wood of Kaolin, the darkness of Mink, and the unique texture of Sanzibar. Additionally, we included light colors like Neenish by Walker Zanger and Playful Plum by Dunn-Edwards Paints. Lastly, we included greens that add just the right pop of color to the board. Chaps by Cortina Leathers is a beautiful bright green that pops against the browns of the recolored suede carpet and Vector by Burch adds more texture in a more subdued green tone.
