On our journey to Colombia, we discovered the charm of Salento. The charming village is famous for its remarkable architecture and vivid streets that grab attention. The abundance of colors and unique detailing inspired our designers to craft the Azulejos carpet. The buildings in Salento feature a traditional building technique accompanied by ornate signature details and decorative methods. The bahareque method is a traditional building technique that uses a mixture of earth, horse manure, and water. We noticed various facades through Salento, and the styles vary according to the year the house dates back to.
Upon entering a traditional Salento house, you notice that the patio is the central point. The kitchen and other rooms surround the patio enhanced with river stone. The colors remain in the same color scheme, with light tones and pastels that reflect Salento’s spirit. The colorful buildings in Salento aren’t only vivid on the outside. Inside, they reveal a distinctive mix of colors and striking patterns. The inspiration for our Azulejos carpet came from Salento’s colorful interiors. We borrowed inspiration from a floor and a ceiling, fusing the elements to design a lively carpet.
The ceiling is adorned with clay tiles that shape repetitive circular patterns. The fantastic patterns extend to the expanded platform, which protects against rain. A carefully picked mix of pastel colors and lots of details are a signature characteristic of the tile patterns found in traditional houses.
The circular ceiling pattern in this house provided us with the inspiration we needed to craft our Azulejos carpet. The balanced combination of baby blue and bright blue, together with the rich details, grabbed our attention. The circular patterns provide a gracious visual touch, so we borrowed this element to develop a playful design.
The second source of inspiration was these beautiful floor tiles. The floral motif looks lively and cheerful, making it the perfect addition to the Azulejos carpet design. We borrowed it with the lovely muted pink tone, which became the ideal base. We featured a yellow and olive green combination to enhance the existing colors and bring dynamics. The outcome is a cheerful carpet that reflects Salento’s colorfulness and artistic spirit.
