While on our recent trip to Egypt, we took a safari tour through the Fayoum desert. Here the landscape is serene and peaceful, miles away from the bustling streets of the capital. It was one of our favorite parts of the trip and a brilliant display of the country’s natural landscape. Before us lay a seemingly never-ending stretch of golden sand that met with the blue skies. Adding texture to an otherwise expansive landscape, the terrain is characterized by plateaus, depressions, and dunes. There are also gentle ripples on the surface made by winds that crept along the vast planes.
Having visited first-hand, we think the Fayoum desert is one of Egypt’s best-kept secrets. We felt immediately calm on arrival, the grandeur of the desert making us feel like our troubles melted away. As such, we chose to create a design inspired by one of our favorite Egyptian destinations. The result is a beautiful sand carpet that features a soft wave-like pattern, recreating the desert’s natural textured surface. The continuous waves also help to open the space and create similar feelings of vastness and grandeur.
We used a cream, golden, and caramel color palette to incorporate the desert’s sandy tones into the room for our design. Many other Egyptian artifacts are also of the same sand color palette, such as the ancient pyramids and temples. Egyptians relied on the sandstone and other rocks that make up Egypt’s terrain for building in ancient times. Therefore, our color choices for this sand carpet reflect the Fayoum desert and Egypt in its entirety.
