Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is characterized by Soviet architecture and design. The city was taken over by the USSR in December 1920 and remained part of the Soviet Union until 1991. During this reign, Brutalist influence started popping up throughout the city. Nevertheless, the distinctively Russian use of elaborate arches, domes, and columns still occupies a large part of Yerevan’s urban landscape today. From the iconic Cascade – one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions – to the old movie theatre Cinema Rossiya, iconic Soviet-era architecture is everywhere.

Alongside the Soviet architectural development, a Russian standard railway was also constructed in Yerevan. This connected the capital city with Gyumri and the capital of the Republic of Georgia, Tbilisi. Thus, the Yerevan Railway Station is yet another epitome of Soviet design and a relic of Yerevan’s past. But the railway was abandoned following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s.

While on our travels in Yerevan, we saw several old railway carriages that have sat abandoned for whole generations. Once a new addition to the city, they today are mottled and rusty thanks to the powers of Mother Nature. The patchy copper backdrop has turned green in places through oxidation and is where we took inspiration for our carpet colors from. We chose the Tie Dye Recoloured carpet by Ege Carpets as we loved that the splotched design mimics the natural decay of the abandoned carriages. The partnership of dark brown-red with green also creates a beautiful contrast. This carpet makes the perfect backdrop for our Soviet-inspired Yerevan mood board with strong ties to the country’s past.

In our mood board, we have used woven upholstery Arthur and lush suede Chaps in neutral tones. These add an interesting texture. To further enhance the feelings of nature taking over and decaying artificial items, we add Gardens with Foliage. The use of Unique Art Washington tiles adds further depth. The Talisman Artwork tile, in particular, has bright blue patinas and rich oxidized areas. We used a small circular piece to mimic the rounded marks on our custom carpet and the patina on the tile itself. The rounded edges also nicely juxtapose the sharp angles and remind us of the arches and domes atop straight pillars characteristic of Soviet architecture. Other products we used include Wash by Siena, the Rogue Antique Slab tile, and I Cocci by Highstyle Stone & Tile.

With our Easy Recolour concept, you too can create a personalized carpet within seconds. Choose any colors you wish to include in your latest interior project and have your perfect carpet shipped to you within 3 weeks.
