Belgian artist Jan Fabre amazes many with his iridescent ceiling work called “Heaven of Delight.” Fabre is known as the enfant terrible of Belgian contemporary art. This is because all of his artwork borderlines controversy and he usually uses raw and unconventional materials like human blood, live animals, and even his sperm. Although his artwork may be provocative, it surely is captivating. His work at the Belgian royal palace is the inspiration for our organic green carpet mood board.
His Heaven of Delight piece sits at home in Brussels’ Royal Palace, which Queen Paola herself commissioned. The piece is a bright green color that shines and sparkles. In typical Fabre fashion, it is not just green crystals that make it pop. Over one million beetles cover the ceiling. The jewel beetles come directly from Southeast Asia, primarily from Thailand. The beetles retain such a vibrant green color because there is chitosan in the beetle’s carcass’s composition. This is a substance that does not lose the green color over time. Even though they are all the same breed of beetle, some have shades of other tones. There are hints of red, emerald, blue, and some yellow hues that can be seen. Not only are the beetles on the ceiling, but also the chandelier hanging from it.
These beetles create a tapestry of color and light for the royal palace, and the ceiling is stunning. Similarly, we recolor one of our carpet designs into emerald green. When you look closely at the design, you notice many dots that translate Fabre’s use of the individual beetles to create something much grander.
For our mood board, we use the Pointillist Rose as the backdrop. The carpet design is also combined with our other contract products. The products are Pacific Silk by Dupont Tedlar Wallcoverings, Moroccan by Design and Direct Source, and Amazed by LBI Boyd Design Resource. The 33831 by Kravet is also in the mood board assembly and Epoca Contra Tile by ege Carpets.
