High up in the hills lays the stunning Medieval town of Monsaraz, overlooking the largest human-made lake in Europe, the Alqueva reservoir. The village is a time capsule with its cobbled streets, fortress walls, and walls worn by centuries of history. It was regained from Moorish occupants in the 12th century then occupied by Knights Templar, of which you still see an apparent influence. We loved the worn walls, the all-white color scheme, and the panoramic views over this Spanish-Portugues border region.
